The Top 5 Apps That Will Make Your South Korea Trip Easier

Exploring South Korea

Planning a South Korea trip? Whether you’re heading there for a short visit or a longer stay, downloading a few essential apps before you go will make your experience smoother and a lot more enjoyable. During my 7-day trip to South Korea, these five apps were absolute game-changers, and I highly recommend you download them before starting your own adventure.

Setting up these apps can be a bit tricky at first since many of them are in Korean by default. However, don’t worry—use Papago, a translation app, to help you get through any language barriers. Once you’re inside the app, you can switch the language to English, and everything should be good to go.

Here’s my list of the top five apps you should have on your phone before heading to South Korea:

1. Naver Map

I’ll start with a big one—Naver Map. You may be surprised to hear this, but Google Maps isn’t as reliable in South Korea. While it does work to some extent, it’s not nearly as accurate or detailed as Naver Map. Naver is South Korea’s primary search engine, and their map app is just as popular and efficient. It’s incredibly accurate, easy to use, and will help you get around the city without any issues. The app can also be switched to English in the settings, but it’s still more functional in Korean, so don’t be afraid to rely on its navigation even if you’re not fully familiar with the language.

2. Kakao Taxi

In South Korea, services like Uber, Cabify, or Grab aren’t available. Instead, Kakao Taxi is the go-to app for getting a ride. I strongly recommend you create a Kakao account ahead of time, set up a Kakao email, and ensure your Kakao credentials are ready. Once you’re in South Korea, get a local SIM card so you can use the app without any issues.

Kakao Taxi will ask you for a phone number to set up your account, so be prepared for that. Although South Korea has an excellent public transportation system (especially the subway), it’s still a good idea to have Kakao Taxi installed. I found it especially useful when I needed a ride late at night when the metro was closed. I always prefer having a backup option to avoid the possibility of getting stranded on the streets at 2:00 AM!

3. Papago App

Let’s face it—if you’re visiting South Korea, chances are you don’t speak Korean fluently. While many signs are in English, it can still be challenging to read menus, nutritional labels, or other text-heavy material. That’s where Papago comes in. This app is perfect for translating text from images. Simply point your phone’s camera at a menu, a sign, or a label, and Papago will instantly translate it into your chosen language.

It’s incredibly helpful for navigating food menus or reading instructions on products. I used it extensively throughout my trip, and it saved me from many awkward situations where I had no idea what I was ordering. Highly recommend this app for anyone traveling to South Korea who doesn’t speak Korean.

4. GetYourGuide

Whether you’re in South Korea or anywhere else in the world, GetYourGuide is an app you should always have when booking tours. It’s an excellent platform to reserve tours, activities, and experiences in advance, saving you time and stress. During my stay in South Korea, I used GetYourGuide to book several fantastic tours, including a trip to Seoraksan Mountain, a visit to Nami Island, and a tour of the Gardens of Morning Calm.

I also booked the DMZ tour through GetYourGuide, which was an unforgettable experience. Booking through the app was a great decision because it provided transport and a guide, which made visiting these out-of-town locations much more convenient and time-efficient. I could have gone on my own, but it would have been more challenging and time-consuming.

5. KakaoTalk

If you’re planning to meet new people or make some local friends during your trip, you absolutely need to download KakaoTalk. In South Korea, WhatsApp isn’t widely used, and KakaoTalk is the app of choice for communication. It’s like the “everything” app in South Korea—people use it for messaging, sending photos, making voice calls, and even transferring money.

If you’re going to socialize or maybe even date while you’re in the country, KakaoTalk is essential. It’s easy to set up and is incredibly popular among locals, so don’t be surprised if everyone you meet asks for your KakaoTalk ID.

Final Thoughts

These apps made my 7-day trip to South Korea so much easier and more fun. They helped me navigate the city, book tours, communicate with locals, and more.

To recap:

  • Naver Map for navigation
  • Kakao Taxi for rides
  • Papago for translations
  • GetYourGuide for tours and activities
  • KakaoTalk for messaging

One final piece of advice: After you’ve downloaded these apps, take some time to explore their settings and switch the language to English where possible. Naver Map, for example, has an English option that makes it even easier to navigate the city.

With these apps on your phone, you’ll be all set for a smooth, stress-free, and enjoyable South Korean adventure. Safe travels!
