There is a very famous picture circulating on Instagram whenever you look for anything related to Rio de Janeiro and this is Pedra do Telegrafo, it has gone viral because when you take a picture on this Rock it seems as if you are hanging suspended on the rock and that if you let go you will fall into the abysm.
Getting There?
I booked the tour with Selina Hostel to visit Pedra do Telegrafo and the tour was around 25 USD. They picked you up at around 5:40 at the hostel and left you back at the hostel at around noon, depending on traffic or how long it takes you to reach the rock and take pictures at it.
It took around 2 hours to get to the start of the hike, because of traffic and because we had to pick up other tourists that were doing the tour.
We departed at 5:40 AM and arrived at approximately 8:00AM at the starting point.
Is the Hike Difficult?
The hike took us 40 minutes to get to the top of the rock, it was a very easy hike and enjoyable because we stopped at different viewpoints.
One thing that you have to keep in mind is that around Rio de Janeiro the weather can be weird and sometimes it gets very foggy so you cannot see anything. But I will suggest you check the weather before going on this hike otherwise everything will be covered in clouds and you won’t be able to see the horizon.
Our surprise when getting to the top and something I did not expect was that there was a huge line to take the picture on the rock ( but I guess that is what happens with place gone Viral on Instagram).
The Line took us like 2 hours to get to take the picture on the rock.. but we waited because that was the purpose of the hike hahaha taking this famous picture. The hike was amazing especially because the group was fun and joyful.
Is it Worth it?
One thing I forgot to mention! When you reach the top, there’s a photographer who will charge around $1 USD for a professional picture. He’ll even assist you with posing on the rock. If it’s foggy, he can enhance the image for you, but this service costs a bit more—around $6 USD.
Here’s his website where you can check out some of the amazing photos: https://trilhandoguaratiba.com.br
If you really want this iconic shot and don’t mind waiting in line, it’s definitely worth it! The views are stunning, and I highly recommend going on a weekday, as weekends can be very crowded. I visited on a Sunday, and it was packed, so a weekday visit is a must!
I met really cool people during the hike so for me it was definitely worth it!
